Chapter title: Mary's Compassion
 
Mary had neither original nor actual sin to expiate. How was it, then, that she, the sinless one, should have to suffer so much all her life? Suffering is the law of love; it was Mary's love that made her martyrdom, and because she loved more than any other creature, she suffered an incomparable martyrdom. Suffering is the actual glorification of Jesus Christ in us. By suffering, we continue and complete His Sacrifice maternity is purchased by suffering. Let us, then, reflect upon Mary's participation in the Passion of Jesus, and try to understand the part she took in it.

By a supernatural light, Mary saw Jesus in the Garden of Olives; she shared in His prayer, His sorrow, His agony, for there was perfect love and sympathy between those two hearts.
Later she saw Jesus betrayed by Judas, abandoned by all, denied by Peter. She arrives at the pretorium: she hears the stokes of the scourging. She follows Him to Calvary.

​What a sight for a mother! She too is being crucified- the rebounds of the hammer give Mary her stigmata. She hears Jesus cry out that He has been forsaken by His Heavenly Father!-her well-beloved Son has breathed His last sigh. What does Mary do now? She is in the agony of grief and love, Mary's life will now be passed in recalling the sorrows of the Passion, in order to renew her own martyrdom and the glory rendered to God by her sufferings. She will retrace again and again that path of sorrow, and so be the first to teach us the pious devotion-so powerful with Jesus, and so useful to the soul- The way of the Cross. Abbreviated text
 

 
 
MEDITATION
 
Eucharistic adorers will identify with the suffering members of the Mystical Body of Christ. It is a grace that will come to those who spend time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Mary will teach us this law of love that she knew too well. Mary was one with Jesus. St. Peter Julian states so perfectly, "for there was perfect love and sympathy between those two hearts." Mary suffered in the Pascal Mystery as if it were her. She was there with a total embrace of the torture that her Son endured. She probably would have been less pained if it were her that experienced all the agony. Mary's love is a model for us, she is the one to show us the way of the Cross. Jesus Himself met her on His way. We too must meet her. This relationship is a divine gift from God. 
 
As consecrated children, we live in the Pascal Mystery, the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. Those who are suffering become our suffering, "And if one member suffers anything, all the members suffer with it; or if one member glory, all the members rejoice with it." (1Cor 12:26)  St. Peter Julian continues, "suffering is the actual glorification of Jesus Christ in us. By suffering, we continue and complete His Sacrifice." Our lives continue to become a living prayer when we live out the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in our lives. We become more like the One who we receive and offer His life to all. The sacrifices come from the depths of our love for Jesus Christ. Like Mary, we want to give back for all of the blessings. Our Blessed Mother's heart of love came from love, the love of Jesus. She witnessed this love, adored this love, embraced this love, and became this love. 
 
True joy can only come from the truth of God's revealed life in us. The crosses we embrace offered back with a grateful heart will give praise to the Heavenly Father. The mystery of our salvation is recognized by our longing to serve. It is in the act of giving that our consciences are formed in God. Mary was graced with the light of Heaven unveiled to her by the union of her heart to the will of the Promise of the Father. Her complete trust empowered by the Holy Spirit offered her the grace to withstand Calvary and the passion that led to it. Mary, teach us the law of love, teach us to sacrifice for one another. Teach us to identify with the pains and sorrows of others as if it were our own. Teach us to offer up all that is displeasing to us in the spirit of joy for the love of Our Heavenly Father. 
 
 


SEND
 
Make a perpetual promise to recite a spiritual communion prayer if you cannot get to daily Mass, the faith you place into the prayer is the grace you will receive from it. Continue to journal and prepare for a good and humble confession. Try to find time to spend with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
